My kids keep wanting fizzy drinks and I am sure that it is because it is something they are not really allowed. The are allowed sparkling water which means they only ask for it when it is an option between still and sparkling. But when they can they ask for lemonade. Now I must be honest, that the reason they ask for that is because they know I might say yes to lemonade but it is a definite no to a cola. So, I bet you are wondering why? Well essentially, colas have caffeine as well as sugar and honestly it is bad enough dealing with the kids with a sugar rush. Kids with a caffeine rush also are a nightmare.
Recently my eldest got a sip of cola and he went mmmmm – I like this. It reminded me of when I was a teenager (not long ago of course!!) and they used to do the taste test. Personally I always preferred Coca Cola and it was quite funny because the taste test used to be carried out by Pepsi!! However most people could not distinguish between the two. Funny still where the ones who were adamant they liked one particular brand but ended up choosing the other.
Today I tend to drink Coke Zero out of choice. Recently I got a diet Pepsi and I was surprised just how different it tasted. So what are the main choices available. The main brands known are obviously Coca Cola or often known as Coke and Pepsi.
Coca Cola offers these varieties – Coca Cola (original), Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Cherry Coke, Vanilla Coke, Cherry Zero, Diet Cherry, Diet Coke with Citrus Zest and if you are lucky enough to find it Caffeine Free Diet Coke.
Pepsi seem to have fewer brands basing their varieties only on the original – Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Max. Interestingly, Pepsi claim that 68% of their cola sales are the Sugar Free variants.
There are other brands on the market but these are far less common and taste wise do not generally come up to scratch. This is not to say they are not good… just that they are not brand names.
As for me… I could give my kids the Caffeine Free Diet Coke which contains no sugar or caffeine but I still won’t. The reason is because I would rather they do not “like” or get used to the taste because let us be honest… it will only eventually be detrimental to them. While I can get away with it, it will be Milk or Water for them.
Meanwhile a sneaky Coke Zero or Pepsi Max once in a while for me is the way to go! But this is just my choice!
PS The variants of Cherry and Vanilla are absolutely delicious but to me they are just really treat drinks as they are really sweet, even their diet versions.
